BiodivSummit 2019

The Origin of Species and the Biodiversity - BioMankind is the new paradigm of the 21st century?

Over the centuries, the inhabitants of the municipality of Proença-a-Nova have taken from the resources of the land what they needed for their daily lives. Currently, even under new garments, the forest continues to be the common denominator of value-added activities, such as nature tourism, extraction of essential oils, timber, mycology, water retention, landscape or the carbon sequestration. The urgency of preserving existing biological diversity should lead to the affirmative creation of legislation to frame the benefits to be paid for maintaining forests and their biodiversity, recognizing their impact on collective well-being and providing an important source of income for those who are their guardians every day.

To reflect on these and other issues, the Municipality of Proença-a-Nova promotes, on May 22nd, the BiodivSummit, a conference focused specifically on the theme of biological diversity, which will be held at the Centro Ciência Viva da Floresta, that promot all forest resources.

Centro Ciência Viva da Floresta

The Proença-a-Nova Centro Ciência Viva da Floresta project resulted from a challenge launched by Living Science - National Agency for the Scientific and Technological Culture to Proença-a-Nova City Hall, allowing the management of a Living Science Center on the Forest theme.

The Pedro Nunes Institute was invited to ensure this association in the creation of the space and its contents.

The primary element of this Center borns from the conception of the forest as a source of knowledge, and the need for continuous updating of scientific knowledge for effective management of the environment, as well as its valorization as a central element of contemporary scientific culture.

Based on the premise "without science there is no culture", the Centro Ciência Viva da Floresta offers to citizens the experiences and resources to incorporate science into their culture and  understand the world in which we live.
